The second capsule collaboration between Tommy Hilfiger & Gigi Hadid feels a lot more experimental and grown up than the first. I don’t know if it was a conscious decision or not, but I love the Mondrian-esque colorblocking that resulted from the deconstruction and reinterpretation of Hilfiger’s classic stripes and nautical motifs. There was a bit of abstraction in the collection, which is a welcomed departure from last season’s literal sailor theme. Don’t get me wrong; it was a really wearable array of pieces and I specially loved the 90s throwback sportswear—and judging from its commercial success, everyone did too—but it’s nice to see the duo ditch the lifesaver this time. For his Spring 2017 collection, Hilfiger continued in the same vein, albeit with a bit more East Coast polish and prep to contrast #TommyXGigi’s Venice Beach vibes. When the Tommy Panama team invited me to their launch of Tommyland two weeks ago, I could not resist this De Stijl-like colorblock pullover and paisley-printed pink pants (that’s a lot of p’s, I know). I ultimately wore another look to the party, but I still had to shoot this one for the blog—because art.
